(Yicai Global) May 22 -- Tencent Holdings has set up an education subsidiary to integrate 20 products spanning six business groups as part of the Chinese internet giant's commitment to upgrading the nation's online tutoring sector, the Shanghai Securities News reported, citing a senior executive vice president at Tencent.

Tencent Education, the new unit, will continue to offer connectivity, management and system services to schools, educational administrations and institutions, Tang Daosheng told the 2019 Tencent Global Digital Ecosystem Summit yesterday. It will also build a technology center for smart education and use cloud computing, Big Data and artificial intelligence technologies to better serve customers, he said.

The Shenzhen-based company has provided services to 15,000 schools, 300 local education departments and 70,000 educational institutions, covering 300 million users, Tang said.

Tencent participated in nearly 10 education projects last year, covering pre-school education, K12, higher education, adult training, the pay-for-knowledge and other market segments. The projects include the online question-and-answer community Zhihu, English learning app Baicizhan, and online tutoring agency Koolearn Technology Holding, according to technology information website Iyiou.com.

Tencent Education expects more partners to join it in future, Tang told the summit.

The Tencent Global Digital Ecosystem Summit is being held in Kunming, the capital of China's southwestern Yunnan province, until tomorrow.
