(Yicai Global) Nov. 8 -- Chinese tech behemoth Tencent Holdings is recruiting engineers to develop autonomous cars in Silicon Valley despite the fact that the firm has not yet obtained a license to test such cars in California.

"We are building an autonomous driving research team based in Palo Alto," the Shenzhen-based firm said on its website.

"The candidate is expected to have a strong interest in developing cutting edge technologies in multi-sensor fusion for perception, and be passionate about Identify and resolving technical issues."

The open positions include those for quantum scientists, software engineers, as well as experts or senior researchers for behavior prediction, motion planning and control, perception and sensor fusion, as well as simultaneous localization and mapping for autonomous driving.

More than 50 companies have been approved to test autonomous vehicles in the public roads of California, whereas that goes for 14 firms in China including Baidu and Alibaba Group Holding.

Headquartered in Palo Alto, Tencent America has offices in New York, Los Angeles and Seattle. The US unit focuses on fields such as investing, gaming, artificial intelligence, cloud services, entertainment, and internet services. Some of its partner companies and brands are WeChat, QQ, Tencent Cloud, Activision, Epic Games, Halfbrick Studios, King, and Riot Games.

In 2017, Tencent invested USD1.8 billion in US electric carmaker Tesla and obtained a 5 percent stake, becoming its fifth-largest shareholder.
