(Yicai Global) June 28 -- US electric car giant Tesla will recall 285,500 vehicles in China due to an issue with their cruise control feature that could cause unexpected and sudden acceleration. Most of the vehicles being called in are Model 3s.

Under certain conditions, the autopilot system could be activated automatically, potentially resulting in a crash, the State Administration for Market Regulation said in a statement on June 26.

This latest recall adds to the US company's woes in one of its biggest markets as customer complaints about safety issues circulate.

Some of the affected owners may not need to look for the closest service center. Tesla will use its over-the-air technology to upgrade the software for free, according to the SAMR. The California-based firm is expected to contact owners whose vehicles need on-site fixing.

Tesla's Beijing and Shanghai arms will be responsible for the repairs. Nearly three-quarters of the vehicles involved are China-made Model 3s, produced between December 2019 and June 2021. Almost 14 percent of the total are Model Ys, and the remainder are imported Model 3s.
