Tesla’s ‘Silk Road’ Charging Line Comes Onstream in Northwest China Tesla’s ‘Silk Road’ Charging Line Comes Onstream in Northwest China

(Yicai Global) Dec. 24 -- The China section of the “Silk Road" charging line laid by Tesla has become fully connected after charging stations in Urumqi and Hami that the US electric vehicle giant invested and constructed in northwest China went into operation yesterday, Shanghai Observer reported.

The domestic section of Tesla's "Silk Road” charging line starts from Xi'an, the capital of northwestern Shaanxi province, and ends in Urumqi to its northwest in the Xinijang Uygur Autonomous Region. A total of 11 charging stations -- eight super charging ones -- have been built in 10 major cities along the almost 2,600-kilometer corridor.

“Tesla's new charging line will allow ever more of its users to drive to enjoy the magnificent scenery in northwest China,” a Tesla China staffer said.

The EV maker will increase its investment in the distant region next year, including building centers that integrate experience, delivery and service in Urumqi, Yinchuan, Lanzhou and Xi'an, the staffer also indicated.

All Tesla superchargers are original imports from the US. Tesla previously announced its investment of CNY42 million (USD6.4 million) to build a super charging pile plant in Shanghai when its Model 3 sold well in China. The plant is scheduled to go into operation in the first quarter, with an initial plan to produce 10,000 super charging piles annually, mainly V3 super charging piles.

Tesla's V3 supercharging supports peak rates of up to 250 kilowatts per car, doubling the 120 kW of V2 supercharging, according to China Daily.
