Umetrip Faces Accusations for Leaking Air Passengers' Personal Information Umetrip Faces Accusations for Leaking Air Passengers' Personal Information

(Yicai Global) June 12 -- Travel app Umetrip, which was previously suspended by some airlines from carrying out online check-in due to risks of leaking passenger privacy, is again reportedly caught up in information leaks over new features it tests.

Some netizens recently discovered that Umetrip mobile app, released by TravelSky Technology, has quietly rolled out the "virtual cabin" function. When selecting a seat via the app, you can view the fellow air passenger's personal information by clicking on the seat icon and chat with the passenger privately, Yangcheng Evening News reported.

Central enterprises under State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council, namely China TravelSky Holding, China National Aviation Holding, China Southern Air Holding and China Eastern Air Holding, hold a combined 61.6 percent stake in the operating company of Umetrip.

By using the app, passengers can find out about the flight information, such as check-in time and gate number. Some airlines also allow passengers to use Umetrip for seat selection and other services. However, after a recent latest update, the app has introduced the function of viewing the information of other fellow passengers on the same flight.

One netizen also found that the information of passengers of other classes, including the first-class, could also be seen, and the information provided even includes their start sign, flight records and other related personal information. The netizen said he is now worried and is not sure whether he can delete his registration information completely even after uninstalling the app.

Umetrip posted an apology on microblogging site Weibo today, saying it always makes it top priority to protect passengers' privacy, and is committed to helping users get access to authorized information. It also promised to set the personal home page on the app to the default off mode.
