Unitree's 'Superman' Robot Smashes Human Record for Standing Vertical Jump(Yicai) Aug. 18 -- China's Unitree Robotics has unveiled a new humanoid robot, nicknamed "Superman," that can jump to a height of two meters straight from the ground, beating the human record by about 30 centimeters.
In addition, the new robot with its 85 cm long legs can run at a maximum speed of 12.66 meters per second, also breaking human limits, according to a video released by Hangzhou-based Unitree yesterday. The company noted it spent over three months developing the robot, but still has a lot of improvements to make in the coming months.
According to multiple reports, Unitree will participate in the second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing from Aug. 22 to 26, with the video of its robot performing exceptional feats raising expectations.
The "Superman" robot shows the technical capabilities of Unitree in the algorithm and motor module, an industry insider told Yicai. "The robot jumps to a height of two meters and lands steadily, relying on algorithms to adjust the balance.
"The explosive power of the motor is also an important support, and it is necessary to ensure that the battery does not overheat," the insider said, adding that its ability to break human limits may come in handy in emergencies.
Unitree relies on the performance upgrade of its self-developed high torque density motor to provide sufficient power support for robots to run at high speeds, Zhou Di, a senior engineer at the Ministry of Science and Technology, said to Yicai. In addition, its millisecond-level dynamic balance control algorithm continues to evolve, combined with multi-sensor real-time pose feedback, allowing the "Superman" robot to maintain stability during high-speed motion, he said, noting that the lightweight body structure optimization further reduces motion energy consumption and improves efficiency.
Studying the running speed of humanoid robots is not about pursuing speed itself, but about continuously refining their dynamic balance ability, complex terrain adaptability, and instantaneous response accuracy through extreme sports testing, Zhou stressed. These core technologies are the key for androids to enter unstructured scenes, he added.
Crossing obstacles in factories, walking on stairs between buildings, or walking through complex terrain in emergency scenarios all rely on the control tech accumulated in high-speed motion research and development, he pointed out.
Unitree will go public on the Shanghai Stock Exchange's Star Market at a price of CNY150.80 (USD22.37) per share tomorrow. The company expects to raise CNY6.1 billion (USD905 million), giving it a valuation of around CNY61 billion (USD9 billion).
