(Yicai Global) Aug. 31 -- Chinese internet giant Baidu Inc. [NASDAQ:BIDU] modified its news search functions twice over the past week and discontinued statistical functions, which led to complaints from domestic users.

"It is a long-term adjustment," said a Baidu spokesman. The firm claims that the original statistical figures were inaccurate, and advises users to gather the data themselves. "In our opinion, the figures were meaningless for common users," the spokesman added.

"Baidu's search engine is gradually phasing out its public welfare, academic and news functions and focusing on business value, resulting in a more commercialized search engine," said Dong Dengxin, director of the finance and securities research institute at Wuhan University of Science and Technology. Baidu's current search functions are almost all affected by advertisements, and objective search functions no longer exist, he added.
