World's Deepest High-Speed Rail Station Is Under Construction -- Tunneling Under Badaling Great Wall World's Deepest High-Speed Rail Station Is Under Construction -- Tunneling Under Badaling Great Wall

(Yicai Global) Aug. 4 -- China is constructing a batch of 'super projects,' including a high-speed rail tunnel below the well-known Badaling section of the Great Wall in Beijing.

The longest tunnel of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-speed Rail is under construction right beneath the core area of Badaling Great Wall, a world cultural heritage site, the official People's Daily newspaper reported.

The high-speed rail line will be open to traffic by the end of 2019, and connect Beijing with Zhangjiakou, in surrounding Hebei province, the venue for the 2022 Winter Olympics, which lies 101 miles (163 kilometers) north of the capital.

The New Badaling Tunnel of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou High-Speed Rail is the longest tunnel in the entire line, and its shallowest depth from the ground is 4 meters while the greatest depth is 432 meters. The Badaling Great Wall Station in the tunnel, with a building area of 36,000 square meters and depth from the ground of 102 meters, will be the world's deepest and Asia's largest underground train station in mountainous terrain.

The station is designed as a three-layer underground structure, and includes a platform layer, entrance layer and exit layer (equipment layer) from up to down. Such a structure serves to guarantee independent and smooth passenger flows.
