Xiaomi Takes Europe Phone Shipments Crown From Samsung, Strategy Analytics Says Xiaomi Takes Europe Phone Shipments Crown From Samsung, Strategy Analytics Says

(Yicai Global) Aug. 3 -- Chinese smartphone and electronic gadgets maker Xiaomi has surpassed Samsung Electronics in shipping handsets in Europe for the first time to take the No. 1 spot, according to the latest research from Strategy Analytics.

Xiaomi’s Europe shipments jumped 67 percent to 12.7 million units in the second quarter, giving it a 25.3 percent market share, due to the continent’s steady economic recovery, consumers upgrading their phones and attractive pricing, Strategy Analytics said in a report published on its WeChat account today.

Samsung slipped to second place with a market share of 24 percent after moving 12 million handsets, a 7 percent drop. In third was Apple, with a 19.2 percent market share and shipments of 9.6 million, up 15.7 percent. Total European smartphone shipments rose 14 percent to 50 million in the quarter.

Xiaomi has had great success in Russia, Ukraine, Spain and Italy, said Boris Metodiev, deputy director of Strategy Analytics. Consumers have been impressed by the rich features and cost-effectiveness of the Beijing-based company’s Xiaomi and Redmi series.

Samsung has performed well on the new fifth-generation wireless networked models of the Galaxy A series, but it faces growing competition from Apple in the high-end market and has failed to take advantage of Huawei Technologies’ retreat in Europe at the low end, according to Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics.
