China's Stock Markets Open Slightly Lower as US Trade Talks Continue

(Yicai Global) Jan. 8 – China's stock markets opened lower amid uncertainties related to the China and US trade negotiations.

The Shanghai Composite Index dropped 0.11 percent to 2,530.30 points. The Shenzhen Component Index fell 0.25 percent to 7,381.61. The Growth Enterprise Index, also in Shenzhen, fell 0.46 percent to 1,262.20. All three major indexes failed to continue the momentum from yesterday's higher close

China's A-shares are expected to post gains thanks to enhances liquidity in the country and a rebound in the US market, Central China Securities advised on information exchange outlet EastMoney, adding that investors should closely follow the vice-ministerial trade talks between China and the US which finish today.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose 16.8 points, or 0.07 percent, to 25,852.50. Automaker Geely Group [HK: 00175] opened nearly 8 percent down, hitting its lowest level since May 2017 after it announced that December sales plunged 39 percent. The firm also failed to achieve its 1.5-billion-unit annual sales target.
