Huawei's Richard Yu Denies Qualcomm Has Resumed 5G Chips Supply to Chinese Firm Huawei's Richard Yu Denies Qualcomm Has Resumed 5G Chips Supply to Chinese Firm

(Yicai Global) June 14 -- Richard Yu, the executive director of Huawei Technologies and chief executive officer of its Intelligent Vehicle Solution Business Unit, has denied rumors that Qualcomm has resumed the supply of fifth-generation chips to the Chinese telecoms giant.

The Qualcomm rumor, as well as the one claiming Huawei's new flagship smartphone series Mate 60 will be equipped with 5G technology and released in the second half of the year, are fake news, Yu told Yicai Global.

Some consumer electronics bloggers recently said on Weibo that Huawei allowed Qualcomm to restart chip supply, and Huawei will again equip 5G tech on its smartphones from the Mate 60 series that will be released in the second half of this year.

"The Biden administration plans to allow top semiconductor manufacturers from South Korea and Taiwan to maintain and expand their existing chipmaking operations in China," Wall Street Journal reported on June 12. The Biden administration intends to extend the exemption period for export controls, which aim at restricting the sale of advanced chips and chipmaking equipment to China by the US and foreign companies using US technology, according to the WSJ report.

Huawei and Qualcomm have not yet responded to the above news.

In July 2021, Huawei released the P50 series, returning to its normal product delivery cycle. Since then, the share of Huawei mobile phones has gradually recovered. "But Huawei's P series, including its foldable phones, are still using fourth-generation technology," a Huawei dealer told Yicai Global.

Online rumors of stacking technology that can bypass US sanctions are almost all untrue, an insider at Huawei's chip firm HiSilicon explained to Yicai Global. The phonemaker began to develop stacking technology in 2019 and used it in other Huawei products.

The insider also denied rumors that Huawei will release chips Kirin 720 and Kirin 830, saying that Kirin 710 and Kirin 710A are mainly used on low-end mobile phones or tablets and will not be used on flagship models.

Huawei believed the worst has passed, but for mobile phones and other products that require advanced chips, there are still difficulties to be overcome.
