(Yicai Global) Dec. 11 -- The number of air purifier makers in China has fallen by 35 percent over the past two years as the country continues its efforts to curb atmospheric pollution.

There were 530 brands still active in October this year, compared with 816 two years ago, China Economic Net reported yesterday, citing data from All View Cloud Data Technology. The decline coincided with an almost 30 percent dip in sales over the first half of this year to CNY5.8 billion (USD840 million) -- the largest fall across all home appliance segments.

Sales also dived 39 percent on the Nov. 11 Singles' Day festival -- a Chinese shopping day bigger than Black Friday -- to CNY790 million. Units sold fell 33.8 percent to 456,000.

The sluggish market relates closely to the reduction in smog, said Zhan Qi, general manager of environmental appliances at All View, adding that there is still hope for the market as Chinese consumers become more wealthy and manufacturers improve their products.

His thoughts were backed by consumers who spoke with China Economic Net, saying purifiers are no longer a necessity.

"The technical threshold of the entire market has improved with the implementation of new air purifying standards," said Liang Zhenpeng, an industrial observer. "Small firms will be eliminated from the market if they can't keep up with the pace of tech upgrades, and producers are more and more subdivided in terms of function and technology now -- products are more focused on actual performance and are much less gimmicky than in previous years."

The market has bid farewell to its barbaric growth, though smog is a long-term problem and there is still room for expansion in the future, even if sales volume has declined for now, he added.
