ByteDance Scraps Lawsuit Against Tencent About Blocking Shared Links ByteDance Scraps Lawsuit Against Tencent About Blocking Shared Links

(Yicai Global) March 30 -- ByteDance have withdrawn an alleged unfair competition case, filed 18 months ago, against Chinese social media giant Tencent Holdings.

ByteDance, the owner of the video-sharing platform Douyin, took back claims of unfair competition, and the Fuzhou Intermediate People's Court has approved the case termination, the court said in a statement on March 26.

In September 2019, ByteDance had said that Tencent's platforms, including WeChat and QQ, limit users' sharing of Douyin videos. Douyin is the Chinese version of TikTok. However, WeChat users may watch videos of other platforms, including Kuaishou and Tencent Video, they added.

ByteDance was demanding the Shenzhen-based company to pay them CNY90 million (USD13.7 million) in compensation for the damages.

The latest move may be motivated by a change in court. Last December, the southeastern Chinese court decided that the case should be transferred to Shenzhen, the hometown of Tencent, after the gaming company requested such a change. In February, the ByteDance appealed against the decision.

The time of quarrel is not over. ByteDance's Douyin unit sued Shenzhen-based Tencent Technology, and three other Tencent affiliates, accusing them of monopolistic practices in the Beijing Intellectual Property Court last month. The defendants have already applied to have the case heard in Shenzhen instead.
