(Yicai Global) Sept. 17 -- Chinese battery behemoth Contemporary Amperex Technology and German chemicals giant BASF will join hands on reusing battery materials to serve European carmakers.
The cooperation will help CATL's upcoming plant in Germany to form a local recycling network and to build a secure raw material supply chain, the Ningde-headquartered battery manufacturer said in a statement on its WeChat yesterday, without disclosing any details about ownership.
The Chinese supplier of Tesla and BMW is expanding in Europe. CATL is building its first overseas plant in central Germany's Thuringia. It expects to produce 14-gigawatt hours of batteries in the facility per year by 2022. The total investment is predicted to be EUR1.8 billion (USD2.1 billion).
The partnership should help BASF advance its expertise in the field of lithium-ion battery cathode materials and recycling in order to enhance its position in the global battery raw materials market, the statement added.
Ludwigshafen-based BASF, the world's biggest auto chemicals supplier, has a portfolio of cathode materials to meet new energy vehicle battery makers' demand, per CATL.
