(Yicai) April 16 -- Chery Automobile rebutted reports that the UK luxury auto producer will make cars using the Chinese firm’s new energy vehicle platform.

The report about JLR Auto using Chery's platform is false, Jin Yibo, a spokesperson for the Wuhu-based company, said yesterday.

Two luxury European brands will use Chery's platform to build premium autos, with one about to sign a deal and the other still in talks, Chairman Yin Tongyue said in a livestream on April 14. A report then claimed that Coventry-based JLR Auto will ink a deal with Chery to use its Exceed brand hybrid and battery vehicle technology platforms.

Joint venture marques have a low presence in China's electric vehicle market. The penetration rate of NEVs among domestic brands was 63 percent last month, while that of NEVs among leading JV brands was only 7.4 percent, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association.

Several overseas carmakers have joined hands with Chinese EV manufacturers. Last July, Volkswagen Group invested USD700 million to buy a 5 percent stake in Xpeng, with plans to use the startup's G9 EV platform to develop VW-branded models.

Japan's Toyota Motor has allied with GAC Group to make EVs based on GAC Aion's platform, while Audi has partnered with SAIC Motor to produce EVs based on the latter's high-end smart electric car brand Intelligence in Motion platform.
