China Plans to Set Up Petrochemical Bases on Islands as It Prioritizes Environmental Protection China Plans to Set Up Petrochemical Bases on Islands as It Prioritizes Environmental Protection

(Yicai Global) Dec. 14 -- The Chinese government recently proposed setting up large industrial bases on isolated islands as part of its push to make environmental protection a priority.

China will optimize the industry in accordance with national plans for land-use, urban and rural development, and environmental protection, the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said.

The document requires the government to promote change in China's petrochemical field and establish large industrial centers on islands, peninsulas and abandoned salt pans.

Enterprises that severely violated industrial policies and pollution emission standards will be included in a blacklist of unreliable companies, the departments said. They also introduced relevant disciplinary information.

Chinese authorities have been paying more attention to environmental protection after the country's rapid development took a toll on the environment.
