(Yicai Global) April 13 -- Chinese and US tech moguls dominate the Hurun Research Institute’s 2021 list of self-made billionaires under the age of 40, with four of the top six from China.

Zhang Yiming, the 38-year-old founder of ByteDance Technology, parent of short-video platform TikTok, took the No. 2 slot behind Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg. Zhang’s wealth has soared by CNY250 billion from last year to CNY350 billion (USD53.4 billion). 

The founders of short video platform Kuaishou -- 39-year-old Su Hua and 36-year-old Cheng Yixiao -- came third and fourth after their firm’s listing in Hong Kong last year boosted its valuation to USD160 billion. Su’s wealth increased sevenfold from last year to CNY155 billion, while Cheng’s surged more than eight times to CNY125 billion. 

The finances of 40-year-old Zhang Bangxin, founder of online tutoring firm Xueersi, surged 49 percent to CNY100 billion, earning him sixth place. 

The list, released today, also includes 34-year-old Wang Ning, who set up toy retailer Pop Mart, and his wife Yang Tao, as well as 32-year-old Xu Yi, creator of video-streaming platform Bilibili and Huang Jinfeng, 38-year-old founder of make-up retailer Perfect Diary. 

Zuckerberg, 36, topped the list for the sixth consecutive year with a personal fortune of CNY653 billion, up CNY60 billion from 2020. 

The media and entertainment sectors were the big winners this year, producing all top five billionaires on the list and 18 of the total. Software services and retailing were also strongly represented, and six billionaires in the list are in the blockchain sector. 

Beijing surpassed San Francisco for the first time as the city with most tycoons in the rankings, with Shenzhen third.

Both China and the United States had another 11 inductees this year. The US has 31 billionaires on the list, followed by China with 30, together making up nearly 80 percent. 

The list has a total of 79 self-made billionaires aged under 40, up by 26 from last year. Their combined wealth hit CNY3.4 trillion (USD519 billion), up CNY1.5 trillion on 2020.
