China Was Germany’s Top Export Destination in June for Third Straight Month(Yicai Global) Aug. 13 -- Germany exported the most products to China in June for the third month running as China’s quick recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic has seen it in a better position to resume orders than other countries.
The value of Germany's exports to China was up 15.4 percent year on year in June to EUR8.3 billion (USD9.8 billion), according to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany.
China has also been the country’s biggest source of imports since 2015. In June, German imports of Chinese commodities surged 20.2 percent to EUR9.7 billion.
The US, France and China are Germany’s main trading partners, but the economic fallout from the novel coronavirus pandemic has upset the normal order of things. In the first half, the value of Germany’s exports to China, France and the US slumped by 6.2, 19.3 and 16.3 percent respectively.
Meanwhile the value of Germany’s imports from China rose by 5.7 percent in the first half from the same period last year, while its imports from France and the US dropped by 17.1 and 4.1 percent.
The deepening trade ties between the two nations has raised concerns about Germany’s economic dependence on China. An expert hearing was convened by the committee of foreign affairs of the German Federal Parliament in late June, but the question of re-shaping supply chains was not brought up.
Germany will not take active measures to adjust its supply chains in the short and medium term, as it would incur great costs which at the moment would be unbearable, Hu Kun, deputy director of the Economic Research Office at the Institute of European Studies and Secretary-General of the Sino-German Collaboration Research Center at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told Yicai Global.
The country is run as a market economy and the government has limited control over companies. So it will not make much effort to reshape either its supply or value chains in the short and medium run, he added.
