China's Yunnan, Hangzhou, and Lanzhou Turn to Culinary Tourism to Draw in Visitors After Pandemic China's Yunnan, Hangzhou, and Lanzhou Turn to Culinary Tourism to Draw in Visitors After Pandemic

(Yicai Global) April 7 -- Several Chinese regions, including Yunnan province, Zhejiang's Hangzhou, and Gansu's Lanzhou, are unleashing new policies to highlight their food cultures to attract tourists.

China's catering industry has recovered rapidly after the Covid-19 prevention and control measures were eased and this is also the focus on the rebound of consumption, Peng Peng, executive president of the Guangdong Institutional Reform Research Association, said to Yicai Global. Dining contributes a great share of household consumption as it is daily, boasting huge growth potential, Peng added.

The initiatives emphasize local delicacies. The government of Hangzhou, known for dishes such as West Lake fish and beggars’ chicken, recently proposed to develop intellectual property and make use of live-streaming events on e-commerce platforms to promote its food culture.

The administration of Yunnan announced in February that the southwestern province will create a "Yunnan food map" and develop tours based on local eats to upgrade the culinary offering.

Moreover, northwestern China's Gansu, known for its Lanzhou beef noodles recipe, is reported to be planning to regulate the local hand-pulled noodles industry this year to promote standardized development.

Finally, in November, Liuzhou in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region issued rules targeting the local production and sales of river snail rice noodles, also known as luosifen, to ensure branding and quality.
