(Yicai Global) March 27 -- Chinese bike-sharing service provider Beijing Mobike Technology Co is poised to enter a new overseas market, Japan, in just a few months, Tencent Technology reported yesterday, making Japan the 10th country in which it operates.

It will roll out the service involving some 30,000 bicycles in 20 Japanese cities starting with the capital Tokyo in June, per the report. The firm plans to build at least 4,000 parking sites in collaboration with local governments and owners of vacant lots.

Mobike will also team with three leading convenience store and restaurant chains in the country and create special parking facilities near their outlets. The partnerships will help deepen the service's penetration among local users.

Unlike in China where bicycles can park virtually anywhere, Japan has very strict traffic control rules, and shared bikes must park in designated areas, so the deals with Japanese landowners will facilitate Mobike's efforts to scale up its operations in the country. The company will also be able to offer users discounts through its tie-ins with catering businesses and convenience stores. Users pay JPY50 (USD0.47) to rent a bike for 30 minutes, with payment by credit card or the Line app, a popular payment service in Japan.
