Chinese Departments Issue Circular on Dealing With Commercialization of Buddhism, Daoism Chinese Departments Issue Circular on Dealing With Commercialization of Buddhism, Daoism

(Yicai Global) Nov. 23 -- Twelve government departments including the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the Ministry of Public Security, have jointly issued a circular making it clear that venues for Buddhism and Daoism activities such as temples are non-profit, and all related organizations or individuals should refrain from investing or conducting contracted management or commercial capitals, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The paper states that Buddhism has recently played a positive role in maintaining social harmony and stability, and promoting the economic and social development. However, issues have arisen including the commercialization, investment, construction and contracted management of temples. Failure in solving these problems will not only influence the development of Buddhism and Daoism, the government says.

It calls on venues used for Buddhism and Daoism to refrain from charging high ticket prices, while organizations may not construct or contract large-scale open-air religious statues.

The paper also demands further financial supervision of Buddhist and Daoist venues. They should open an entity settlement account by following the national unified systems for finance, tax, assets and accounting, and conduct tax registration in line with the laws.
