(Yicai Global) Nov. 30 -- Chinese online shopping companies are better than their US rivals in terms of offering personalized experiences to users, according to a co-founder of Sequoia Capital China.
"The user experience from Chinese e-commerce firms is better than that from US peers, because Chinese firms are capable of providing 1,000 kinds of experiences to 1,000 people," state-backed The Paper reported yesterday, citing Neil Shen, the founding managing partner, who spoke at the Fortune Global Tech Forum. The two-day conference, held in Guangzhou, ends today.
The high level of Chinese optimized services was caused by a fierce competition among tech companies, according to Shen. "Every year or so, we are able to see new business models emerge and disrupt the existing order to some extent while grabbing parts of the market share," he said.
Some of the inspiring companies that Shen mentioned were news aggregator Jinri Toutiao and China's version of Groupon called Pinduoduo. "They have very different, unique products that people haven't tried before."
Regarding artificial intelligence, Shen said that the US leads with its advantages over China while China has its own talents and does a good job in terms of video and visuals. The US is one or two years ahead of China in the field of autonomous driving, but China will catch up soon, he added.
There is a good chance that China will prevail, according to Shen. Smartphones are very, very popular in China, he said, adding that this brings in a lot of data. "If tech companies may use this data to improve AI technologies, it will be a great market," he added.
