(Yicai Global) May 9 -- Stock markets on the Chinese mainland opened lower this morning as the prospect of escalating trade friction between the world's two largest economies continued to hamper investor confidence.

The Shanghai Composite Index started down 0.78 percent at 2,871.20, while the Shenzhen Component Index limped 0.92 percent to 8,919.50. The ChiNext Price Index, which tracks growth enterprises listed in Shenzhen, started the day 0.73 percent lower at 1,470.98.
