Frugal Shoppers Help China's Private Labels Beat FMCG Market's Sales Growth, Daymon Says Frugal Shoppers Help China's Private Labels Beat FMCG Market's Sales Growth, Daymon Says

(Yicai Global) Dec. 11 -- The sales growth of China's private-label products has outstripped gains in the overall fast-moving consumer goods market for the past two years as price-conscious consumers become more willing to buy these products, according to a new report.

Sales of goods made to be sold under another retailer's label climbed 26 percent, compared with growth of 11 percent for the whole FMCG sector, US branding agency Daymon Worldwide said in a white paper released yesterday. But private labels still have just a 1 percent share of the consumer goods market in the country.

Consumers are looking for more economical daily necessities while prioritizing value instead of branding, the report said. The most popular categories were consumer staples and household paper products.

But consumers have not formed any special preferences for particular labels so retailers need to improve their strategies to make these products stand out, the report added.
