Didi Takes Ride-Sharing Race to Melbourne Didi Takes Ride-Sharing Race to Melbourne

(Yicai Global) June 15 -- Chinese ride-hailing titan Didi Chuxing plans to roll out services in Melbourne, Australia's second-largest city, as it continues to expand overseas and throttle Uber's market share around the globe.

Beijing-based Didi has been recruiting drivers in the southern city since early June after a successful trial in nearby Geelong last month, state-backed People's Daily reported. The startup, which is the world's most valuable startup at USD56 billion, plans to offer a string of welcome subsidies for new drivers and passengers.

The firm has bought stakes in a host of platforms around the world as it chases after Uber, the American-based app that it drove out of China. It unveiled plans to tap Mexico in April after acquiring Brazil's 99 earlier in the year, and owns parts of Estonia's Taxify and India's Ola, which already operate in Australia.

Didi will run via a wholly-owned local unit and gather feedback from drivers and passengers in the city in order to provide safer, more efficient and eco-friendly service in Victoria state before rolling into other regions.
