(Yicai Global) March 19 -- Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., better known as Foxconn and a key iPhone components supplier, surpassed Samsung Electronics Co. to become the world's largest smartphone assembler in the fourth quarter of last year.

The step-up was mainly a result of orders for the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, according to data from International Data Corp. South Korea-based Samsung topped the yearly charts, followed by Tai-wan-based Foxconn, China-based Oppo Electronics Corp. and Vivo Inc., and Pegatron Corp. from Taiwan.

Global smartphone production hit a brick wall in the fourth quarter as output slumped 13.8 percent on the year while companies sought to work new technologies into their handsets and sales growth in China was stagnant.

Looking ahead, IDC believes that new tech, such as face detection, will continue to evolve, but worldwide smartphone shipments won't stage their comeback until the end of the first half. The researcher also expects major vendors to concentrate on entry-level and mid-range models to cater to emerging markets, which will be the core growth driver in the sector.
