(Yicai Global) May 11 -- Grifols SA, which makes blood plasma-based products, has agreed to partner up with a Chinese biopharmaceutical firm to pump EUR50 million (USD60 million) into setting up a number of plasma donation stations in eastern China.

Barcelona-based Grifols and Boya Bio-Pharmaceutical Group Co. penned a deal in Fuzhou, Jiangxi province, yesterday, the Chinese firm said in a statement. The pair will split investment in the project equally to build and operate the centers in line with Chinese, American and European standards.

Under current Chinese law, only Boya is able to purchase the plasma the pair collect, the statement added. But the duo agreed that if that changes, Grifols will be allowed to purchase half of the donations. Plasma is collected by removing blood with a needle, separating the plasma and then returning the blood to the body.

Grifols, one of the world's top three plasma derivative drug makers for rare and chronic diseases, hopes the partnership will expand its plasma sources for the future, while Boya is excited by the prospect of forming collection stations compliant with international standards.
