Hainan, Shenzhen Are First Regions to Implement China 6 Vehicle Emission Standards Hainan, Shenzhen Are First Regions to Implement China 6 Vehicle Emission Standards

(Yicai Global) Nov. 1 -- China's southern island province of Hainan and tech metropolis Shenzhen became the first regions in the country to adopt new China 6 standards for vehicle emissions today.

Hainan rolled out the new benchmarks for light-duty gasoline vehicles, mostly passenger cars, while Shenzhen adopted the rules for light-duty diesel automobiles, most of which are commercial, according to documents published by their respective governments.

The rollout of the new standards nationwide is set to take place over two phases. The first, China 6a standards for licensing and registration, are due to be fully implemented from July 1, 2020. The second stage, China 6b, is set to be in place three years later.

The China 6b standards are even tougher than those under European equivalent Euro 6. Under Euro 6 standards, carbon monoxide emissions cannot exceed one gram, nitrogen oxide emissions cannot exceed 0.06 grams and particulate matter emissions cannot exceed 0.05 grams. Under China 6b, those figures become 0.5 grams, 0.035 grams and 0.03 grams.

The move could also pose new challenges for petrol refineries, as the China 6 regulations will also dictate that quantities of sulfur, aromatic hydrocarbons and olefin in gasoline are kept lower than under China 5 guidelines.

Other Chinese provinces, such as Hebei, Henan and Shandong, and leading cities like Guangzhou, Beijing and Tianjin, plan to adopt the China 6 standards from the beginning of next year, according to a three-year action plan unveiled by the central government in July.

China had 261,582 China 6-complaint vehicles on its roads as of Oct. 25, according to data from the Vehicle Emission Control Center. Those were made up of 509 different models, all but one of which meet China 6b standards. The remainder is an imported model and only meets China 6a requirements.
