(Yicai Global) Sept. 8 -- Major Chinese bike-sharing platform Ofo, run by Beijing Bikelock Technology Co., has responded to reports that specialists from Chinese internet giant Baidu Inc. [NASDAQ:BIDU] successfully unlocked one of its iconic yellow bikes by intercepting the passcode using a device. The company said the security glitch cannot affect users in practice.
Two of Baidu's security specialists demonstrated at the recent XPwn 2017 Exploration for the Unknown World event that they were able to remotely intercept the passcode for an Ofo bike using a portable signal sniffer device, and unlocked the bike with the code, said online news outlet TechWeb.
Ofo has since contacted the Baidu team and discussed the experiment's technical details. Initial findings show that the actions of the experts were purely experimental and are irrelevant to everyday-user scenarios, the firm said.
The sharing platform has continuously improved its bicycles and smart lock systems in line with its commitment to product safety, Ofo said. It aims to collaborate with external experts on Internet of Things development in the future.
