Self-Driving Tech Is Emerging Faster in China Than US, Head of Alibaba Lab Says Self-Driving Tech Is Emerging Faster in China Than US, Head of Alibaba Lab Says

(Yicai Global) Nov. 24 -- China’s advantages allow for a more rapid development of autonomous-driving technology than in the United States, according to a senior manager at Chinese tech titan Alibaba Group Holding.

China offers the right scenarios for using the technology, Wang Gang, director of the company’s Autonomous Driving Lab, said today at the World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, Zhejiang province.

Unmanned vehicles developed by Hangzhou-based Alibaba have delivered 50,000 express parcels in Zhejiang University, noted Wang, who is also vice president of Alibaba Cloud. That would have been impossible at a US university, he said.

The Chinese government and general public are open-minded and receptive toward new technologies, Wang said. In a global survey on autonomous driving, China ranked first in terms of support for the technology, he pointed out.

Alibaba entered the emergent field at the end of 2015. Its technology for terminal delivery services has proved popular at universities and the firm is cooperating on a vehicle-mounted intelligent operating system with SAIC Motor.
