(Yicai Global) Dec. 1 -- Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision held a meeting with the representatives of IKEA (China) Investment Co., the international furniture chain supplier which has been recalled some defective cabinets in the North American market but failed to do so in the China. The Bureau asked IKEA to fulfill its obligations to ensure personal and property safety of the consumers.
The Bureau has interviewed the representatives of IKEA and asked it to perform its duties to recall any defective products, initiate an immediate investigation into any defective products and take effective measures to protect rights and safety of the consumers, said the information released through "Shanghai News" WeChat account.
During the meeting, the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision requested IKEA to put the protection of consumers' rights and interests above commercial interests, handle the quality problems actively and appropriately, and vigorously undertake corresponding measures in assuring product quality as an enterprise.
IKEA recently recalled 17.3 million drawers including the 'Malm' cabinets and dressers sold from 2002 to June 2016 after a child was killed by the falling drawer at home last May. There has been no similar recall notice in the Chinese market.
In 2016, IKEA recalled a type of drawer with potential safety hazards in the US and Canadian markets but failed to do so in the Chinese market. It was eventually prompted to announce a recall plan at the request of China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
