(Yicai) Oct. 10 -- The South Korean presidential office has announced that semiconductor giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix will be allowed to supply chips with US technology to Chinese factories without a separate approval.

Samsung Electronics told Yicai that the uncertainties related to its production lines in China have been mostly solved, thanks to close coordination with relevant authorities. The company will continue to cooperate with all relevant government parties to maintain a stable supply chain for the global semiconductor industry, it added. SK Hynix has yet to comment on the matter.

Last year, the US enforced new rules restricting China from accessing advanced computing chips, developing and maintaining supercomputers, and making advanced semiconductors. Companies using US-made tools and components were also prohibited from selling high-performance chips to China.

However, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix obtained one-year export control exemptions.

At the end of last month, social media rumors claimed that the US Department of Commerce was discussing to extend the exemptions for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix indefinitely.

Samsung Electronics produces NAND flash memory chips in Xi’an, while SK Hynix produces dynamic random-access memory chips in Wuxi and NAND flash memory chips in Dalian.

Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix took up nearly 70 percent of the global DRAM chip market and 50 percent of the NAND flash memory chip market as of June 30, according to data from consulting agency TrendForce.
