(Yicai Global) May 18 -- Tencent Holdings will finish implementing new anti-addiction rules for all of its mobile games in the first half of this year to stop minors indulging in online gaming, Sina Tech reported.
The Chinese tech giant will also look into using facial recognition technology with its 80 games, including Honor of Kings, to limit top-up spending by underage users, the report said, citing the firm. That will include use of a real-name system for online gaming accounts and control of minors’ game time and spending.
Tencent began implementing the new rules after the Chinese government detailed industry standards last November to prevent addiction. The Shenzhen-based company had earlier enabled measures to prevent dependence forming in 50 products, including Peacekeeper Elite.
Tencent also said it is testing the further application of facial recognition tech on a small scale. For players who have passed real-name authentication but are still suspected of underage gaming behavior, the system will enforce additional facial recognition if they want to top up after paying CNY400 (USD56.20) each month via WeChat Pay, with follow-up payment activities allowed only if their faces are same.
