Tesla to Recall 1.6 Million Vehicles in China to Fix Autopilot Problems(Yicai) Jan. 5 -- Tesla is to recall 1.6 million vehicles in China to fix problems with the Autopilot driver-assistance system. It comes after a similar recall in the United States.
The recall affects imported Model S, Model X and Model 3 vehicles as well as Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced in China between Aug. 26, 2014 and Dec. 20, last year, the country’s market regulator said in a statement today.
The concern is that drivers might misuse the Autopilot feature when the auto lane change function is on, thereby increasing the risk of collision.
Tesla will update the vehicles’ software remotely by over-the-air technology, so most owners will not have to visit a Tesla service center, the statement said. The update will add auto lane change controls as well as relevant reminders for drivers, so as to lower the risk of collision.
The US electric carmaker will also launch a software update for 7,538 imported Model S and Model X vehicles to prevent door latches from coming open during a collision.
Last December, Tesla announced a recall of two million vehicles in the US over the same issue with its Autopilot system.
