TikTok Was First Half’s Most Downloaded Non-Game App, Sensor Tower Says TikTok Was First Half’s Most Downloaded Non-Game App, Sensor Tower Says

(Yicai Global) July 1 -- TikTok and its Chinese version Douyin ranked first among non-game apps for downloads in the first half, new figures show.

The video-sharing app was installed 626 million times in the six months that ended yesterday, according to data projections from consulting firm Sensor Tower.

Owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, the video platform earned overall revenue of USD421 million through Apple’s App Store and Google Play, ranking it third for income behind Tinder and YouTube. China’s Tencent Video came in fourth place.

For game apps, Tencent’s PUBG Mobile and its Chinese version Game for Peace topped the list for both revenue and downloads, earning USD1.3 billion. Another Tencent game, Honor of Kings, was placed second with USD1 billion.

Global consumers spent a total of USD50.1 billion on apps in the first half, a 23.4 percent increase on the same period last year. Faster growth indicated that the novel coronavirus pandemic has led people to spend more on app ecosystems, Sense Tower said.
