User Sues China's iQiyi for Downgraded Screen Resolution User Sues China's iQiyi for Downgraded Screen Resolution

(Yicai Global) Feb. 2 -- A user of China's iQiyi has filed a lawsuit against the Netflix-like video site operator due to a recent change in display resolution when screencasting.

The Beijing Internet Court has accepted the case, a new media arm of Hangzhou-based newspaper Dushi Kuaibao reported yesterday. The plaintiff asks the platform not to restrict its subscribers' display resolution in any way but the person is not requiring compensation for the damages.

Beijing-based iQiyi said on Weibo yesterday that it has received the court notice and will deal with the matter prudently.

In mid-December, the Tencent Video rival adjusted its premium membership functions, lowering the screen resolution of Gold VIP members to 480 pixels from the 4K when screencasting video from a phone to a bigger screen, requiring users to pay extra to get a better user experience.

The essential reason behind iQiyi’s move was profit pressures, an industry analyst pointed out to Yicai Global. In order to break even, the video platform has been hiking its subscription fees in the two past years to cover high content costs.

In the third quarter of 2022, iQiyi’s net loss narrowed by 76 percent to CNY396 million (USD59 million), per its latest earnings report. Based on non-generally accepted accounting principles, the firm even made a net profit of CNY187 million.
