WeChat Deletes Mobike From Its Digital Payment Service After Tie-Up Deal Ends WeChat Deletes Mobike From Its Digital Payment Service After Tie-Up Deal Ends

(Yicai Global) Jan. 10 -- WeChat, Tencent Holding's hugely popular lifestyle app with more than 1 billion users, has removed Mobike Technology from its payment platform WeChat Wallet, one of the bike sharer's most important sources of customers, because their cooperation agreement has expired.

But users can still unlock a bicycle through Mobike's WeChat applet, state-backed Jiemian News reported, citing the Beijing-based bike sharer.

Mobike was one of the earliest to debut an applet in WeChat when the platform launched the lightweight apps in January 2017. Two months later, Mobike was added to third-party services on WeChat Wallet along with Didi Chuxing, Meituan Dianping and other popular service apps.

Mobike's monthly active subscribers then tripled from the month earlier, with more than half of each day's new users coming from WeChat applets, it said in May 2017. It hasn't disclosed data about the number of users logging in through WeChat Wallet.

"Mobike's weekly usage jumped 100 percent after introducing its WeChat applet," Yang Yujie, product head of Mobike, said in an interview.

The company's applet had 55.5 million monthly active users in September, twice that of its own app, according to the China Mobile Internet Report in Autumn 2018 released by QuestMobile.

Mobike ranked 19th in the 2018 December Top 200 WeChat applets list released by third-party data analysis platform Aladdin Future Technology and first among travel service applets.
