What Is the 'Head Content' in China's Internet Content Creation? What Is the 'Head Content' in China's Internet Content Creation?

(Yicai Global) Aug. 3 -- What is 'head content'? Literally, head content means that content at the apex of an entire content library. Therefore, it refers to the most important constituent of the content that content entrepreneurs own.

In the past, we styled such content a 'masterpiece' or 'magnum opus' able to convey the thoughts and style of its creator, but the concept of head content here must be presented in conjunction with a platform's content distribution.

The part of a platform that can attract many users might be a very small portion of the content classifiable as head content in that platform. "The content area is like a pyramid where the head content accounts for 5%, quality content accounts for 20%, and general content takes up the remaining share, where only the smallest part -- the head content -- can gain the highest value," said Ma Dong, a famous producer of Chinese internet content and a TV host.

This is reminiscent of the 80/20 Rule propounded by Vilfredo Pareto, i.e. 20% of people possess 80% of the wealth of the society. The 80/20 Rule also works if applied in the field of content entrepreneurship, whose entrepreneurs -- whether  bloggers or vloggers -- need not consider whether their content may become head content, they only need to offer better content. The better the content, the more user attention it will attract, and that the content will become the platform's head content will thus be likely.

Looking back, there was no writer who knew at the very beginning that he would create world famous works. This shows, therefore, that users often determine the value of content, not its creators. Even if content stands as the current basis of a business, one cannot force consumers to accept poor content via various commercial devices, and the consequences of trying to do so would certainly be counterproductive in any case.
