After Two Deaths, Tesla Says Chaozhou Driver Failed to Hit Brakes After Two Deaths, Tesla Says Chaozhou Driver Failed to Hit Brakes

(Yicai Global) Nov. 14 -- Tesla claims the driver of a recent Model Y accident that killed two and injured three in southern China's Chaozhou did not use the brakes, countering family members' stance.

Based on driving data, the driver did not hit the brakes but he briefly pressed and released the parking button four times, The Cover reported today, citing the Texas-headquartered firm. Authorities are seeking third-party agencies to find out the truth, and Tesla will provide assistance as necessary, the electric vehicle giant added. Moreover, CCTV footage proves that the car’s brake lights did not turn on as the vehicle accelerated.

The accident happened in Guangdong province on Nov. 5, several media outlets reported. The driver is currently hospitalized. He stepped on the brake pedal but failed to slow the vehicle, his family said on China’s Twitter-like social media platform Weibo, asking authorities to find out the cause as soon as possible.

The car was swerving and trying to avoid a crash so this proves that the driver was aware of the situation and attempted to apply the brakes, a family member said, referring to the period of tens of seconds of speeding on the street.
