China Officially Rolls Out Automated Highway Tolls Nationwide China Officially Rolls Out Automated Highway Tolls Nationwide

(Yicai Global) Aug. 19 -- China has launched its automated highway toll collection system across the entire country, allowing drivers to pay fees without stopping.

Some 90 percent of tollgates in China will accept payment via an electronic toll collection, or ETC, system, the Ministry of Transport said on WeChat yesterday. Some 10.7 million people already use the system and this will rise to more than 180 million, with units being fitted in 80 percent of domestic vehicles, according to the post.

Drivers can learn and inquire about the ETC system by following the Ministry of Transport's WeChat account or using the State Council's mini-app, it added.

The government and the transport ministry introduced the China ETC Service mini-app to allow drivers to register for the system and offer online installation tutorials. The pair plan to add additional services, such as digital invoicing, in future.
