China's Trade Growth May Slow in Fourth Quarter, Customs Authorities Say China's Trade Growth May Slow in Fourth Quarter, Customs Authorities Say

(Yicai Global) Oct. 12 -- China's international trade growth may slow in the fourth quarter, though steady expansion is expected to continue throughout the year, the country's customs authorities have said.

China's imports and exports grew rapidly in the first three quarters, laying a solid foundation overall in 2018, China's General Administration of Customs Li Kuiwen said at a press conference. The growth of global trade also faces challenges because of the uncertain international environment, unstable factors and the escalating China-US economic and trade frictions.

Li said that all major international organizations have lowered their global growth expectations. In general, China's international trade will still maintain a steady growth throughout the year and will show a further improvement in quality and efficiency backed by the deepening of supply-side structural reform, strengthening of economic-development, and new progress made in market diversification and trade facilitation.

In the first three quarters, China's import and export of goods totaled CNY22.3 trillion (USD3.2 trillion), an increase of 9.9 percent over the same period last year. Among them, exports were CNY11.9 trillion, up 6.5 percent, while imports were CNY10.4 trillion, up 14.1 percent. The trade surplus stood at CNY1.4 trillion, down 28.3 percent.
