(Yicai Global) Dec. 29 -- China Youth Development Foundation, a non-profit organization working for the well-being of Chinese youth and children, plans to expand its 'Hope Kitchen Project,' a kitchen facility donation program for schools, into cities from impoverished rural regions. Beijing and Shanghai will be first pilot cities to carry out nutrition education for urban students.

Some Chinese adolescents have suffered weight problems during their growth and development, a CYDF official said, adding Hope Kitchen Project has introduced nutrition vitality plan to hone students' bodies through nutrition education and encouraging exercise and other activities since 2014.

Initiated in 2009, the Hope Kitchen Project donates modern electrical kitchen equipment to schools in poor areas to solve the students' malnutrition problems. As of 2016, the country had 5,500 hope kitchens, benefiting more than 2.75 million students.

The nutrition vitality plan is a charity project sponsored by Mondelez China, formerly Kraft Foods China, under the US food giant Mondelez International Inc. [NASDAQ:MDLZ]. It mainly focuses on children under 12, and has teamed up with non-governmental organizations in 14 countries.

The growth rates of overweight and obesity problems among Chinese children have risen 5.1 and 4.3 percentage points in the past decade, publicly available data show. Some 22.7 percent of school canteens provided fried foods more than twice a week, showed another survey about lunches in primary and secondary schools in Beijing.
