(Yicai) Aug. 13 -- The number of humanoid robots expected to compete at the second World Humanoid Robot Games, dubbed the 'Humanoid Robot Olympics,' will more than quadruple from the inaugural edition last year.

More than 2,000 robots from 16 countries and regions will compete across 51 categories in the second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing from Aug. 22 to 26, China Central Television reported today. The number of categories has nearly doubled compared with the inaugural games.

The events, which will include high jump, weightlifting, tug-of-war, and table tennis for the first time this year, will comprehensively assess robots' cognitive decision-making, motion control, physical structure, and core components, according to CCTV.

The application scenarios of this year's 'Humanoid Robot Olympics' were also expanded to 21 from six, covering nine major fields, including home, hotel, and logistics.

For example, the newly introduced Integrated Pentathlon event requires robots to run on a 100-meter track while performing tasks, such as carrying heavy objects and passing items, comprehensively testing their understanding of the physical world and their whole-body coordination.

Another new event focused on robotic hand movements includes eight disciplines, such as electric tool assembly and using tweezers to pick up beans. It tests robots' micro-vision and precision operation capabilities.

To accelerate the technological advancement and application promotion of humanoid robots, China held the inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games last August. It was the world's first comprehensive competition for humanoid robots, attracting 280 teams and over 500 robots.
