Guangzhou South Station Uses Facial Recognition to Track Down Criminals Guangzhou South Station Uses Facial Recognition to Track Down Criminals

(Yicai Global) Feb. 6 -- Guangzhou South, one of China's most-used rail stations, is using facial recognition to better locate missing persons and identify criminals at the transport hub.

The station's management committee introduced the system in tandem with China Railway Guangzhou Group Co., local news agency South Metropolis Daily reported today. The station has set up cameras in parking lots, waiting halls and ticket gates to capture travelers' faces and analyze and archive data in the cloud to improve security.

The system can be used to help locate children who became victims of child trafficking. A staff member can upload an image of a missing person to see which faces most often surround them and determine which exit they left the station from.

Passenger flow through Guangzhou South hit 135 million last year, up from less than 9.7 million in 2010, its first year of operation, data from the committee shows. The station is among several in China that have already introduced facial scanners at ticket gates to reduce queuing.
