Huawei Says UK Needs Best 5G Tech as Gov’t Reviews Chinese Telecom Firm’s Role Huawei Says UK Needs Best 5G Tech as Gov’t Reviews Chinese Telecom Firm’s Role

(Yicai Global) May 26 -- A senior Huawei Technologies executive has pointed to the UK’s technology needs and the economic impact of ditching the Chinese telecoms giant as the country revisits its decision to let the firm build part of its fifth-generation mobile network.

Britain needs the best technology, more choices and suppliers along with greater innovation to build a more secure and resilient network, Vice President and UK Chief Zhang Jiangang told Shanghai-based news media Guancha Syndicate in a report out today.

“Removing Huawei would seriously delay 5G, costing the British economy up to GBP7 billion (USD8.6 billion),” Zhang said, drawing on a 2019 study by Mobile UK, a trade group that represents network operators.

In January, the UK government decided to allow Huawei to participate in the country’s 5G telecoms deployment. The review of that decision comes after the US extended its trade embargo on the Shenzhen-based firm on May 15, greatly hampering its global supply chain.

"Following the US announcement of additional sanctions against Huawei, the [UK’s] National Cyber Security Center is looking carefully at any impact they could have to the UK's networks," a BBC report today cited an NCSC spokesperson as saying.
