(Yicai Global) July 30 -- Mytel, Myanmar's third-largest telecoms operator, yesterday used Huawei Technologies' know-how and equipment in the country's first fifth-generation mobile network carrier test, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported.
The test's download speed exceeded 1.6 gigabits a second and the upload speed was more than 100 megabits a second.
Thanks to a reform and opening-up policy that began in 2011 and the help of Chinese telecoms companies, Myanmar's mobile phone ownership jumped to over 90 percent in 2017 from less than 6 percent in 2011, and its communications technology has leapfrogged.
Yangon-based Mytel is a joint venture between Myanmar and Vietnam, with Myanmar owning a 51 percent stake. The company secured a business license in January 2017 and went into service last June. It has about 5.5 million users and a 14 percent market share.
