(Yicai) Dec. 4 -- Tencent Video said it was working to bring back normal service after the video-streaming website owned by Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings had what it called “technical issues” that caused an outage.
Tencent Video, known as WeTV overseas, was fixing short-term “technical issues,” and various functions were being restored as of 9.25 p.m. yesterday, the Shenzhen-based company said on Weibo late the same day, without disclosing the reason for the issue.
Tencent Video’s homepage could be accessed as of 9 p.m. yesterday, but paid membership services were unavailable, Yicai found.
A number of Chinese online service platforms have had technical issues recently, raising public concern about cybersecurity and cost-cutting measures at tech firms.
Taobao, DingTalk, and other apps owned by Alibaba Group Holding had accessibility issues on Nov. 13 due to a problem at the e-commerce giant's cloud computing arm Alibaba Cloud. The app of ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing Technology was down for more than 12 hours on Nov. 27 because of a software problem.
Tencent Video had revenue in excess of CNY10 billion (USD1.4 billion) last year, after swinging into the black in October, according to its parent firm's latest earnings report. Paid memberships fell 3 percent to 117 million in the three months ended Sept. 30 from a year earlier, but climbed 1 percent quarter on quarter.
