(Yicai Global) Oct. 28 -- China’s transport ministry has said it supports pilot projects in frontier fields of smart transport such as autonomous driving and vehicle-road synergy in the cities of Beijing and Shanghai as well as Hebei province.

The ministry supports cities and companies in innovating and conducting pilot projects to advance the development and application of self-driving technologies, spokesman Wu Chungeng said at a press conference today. Wu also said that tolerance of failure is necessary, as is avoiding monopolies.

Chinese cities have been pushing forward with the development of autonomous driving this year.

The National Intelligent Connected Vehicle Test Demonstration Area in Wuhan will ramp up its capacity this year, and will have more than 100 kilometers of roads for open testing. That will make it China’s largest fifth-generation autopilot demonstration zone, Hubei Daily reported on Sept. 3.

Shanghai started testing self-driving vehicles on a demonstration road on Sept. 30. Self-driving buses will begin to run on the road and serve the public early next year, insiders said.

Chinese tech firm Baidu launched its self-driving taxi service Apollo Go in Beijing on Oct. 11, and users can order free test rides at cab ranks in the city’s Haidian and Yizhuang districts without reservations.
