(Yicai Global) Dec. 12 -- The latest Xiaomi 13 handset series is "the most powerful Xiaomi flagship model," a masterpiece that exceeds expectations, according to the Chinese firm's founder.

The smartphone series, which has the new MIUI 14 operating system, is the first product released after Xiaomi's system software team was reorganized, Chairman Lei Jun said during a launch ceremony yesterday.

Compared to Xiaomi 12, the latest series has an improved processor, central processing unit, graphics processing unit, camera, battery life, and charging speed. Prices start at CNY3,999 (USD573) and the Xiaomi 13 Pro costs at least CNY4,999.

The model is the answer to Xiaomi's three-year high-end strategy exploration, according to Lei. In 2020, the Beijing-based company refined its strategy to strive to catch up with Apple in the premium market segment.

Xiaomi's plan is to spend CNY17 billion (USD2.3 billion) on research and development this year. In the next five years, the total investment should tally CNY100 billion (USD14.3 billion). The company has over 29,000 patent licenses globally and over 59,000 global patent applications as of Sept. 30.

Besides the handset and the OS, Xiaomi released five products featuring artificial intelligence. Those include a Wi-Fi router, a wireless speaker, a mini computer, a smartwatch, and headphones.

Moreover, the handset retailer has joined hands with second-hand goods trading platform Zhuanzhuan to launch a phone recycling service for users. Handset owners can trade in their old phones within 13 months of purchase to get a voucher valued at 50 percent of the original price to buy a new one.
